UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's tennis team moved one game closer to the the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tennis Tournament today (Oct. 12) by defeating Michigan Tech, 5-4.
Saginaw Valley got off to a great start in doubles with the No. 1 tandem of Yunjiao Shangguan (Chengdu, China / Shiyang HS) and Kelli Close (Midland, Mich. / H.H. Dow HS) picking up an 8-2 victory.
Also grabbing a win was the team of Katie Piorkowski (Essexville, Mich. / Garber HS) and Charlotte Wong (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island / Colonel Gray Senior High) in No. 3 doubles, edging out their opponents 8-6.
The Cardinals also faired well in singles with the match coming down to freshman Erin Doud (Northville, Mich. / Northville HS) in No. 5 singles who was able to pull out a 6-2, 7-6 victory and score the fifth point for SVSU. Picking up another point for Saginaw Valley was Close in No. 3 singles, dominating her opponent 6-0, 6-0. Wong was also able to grab a 6-2, 6-3 victory in No. 4 singles.
With the win, Saginaw Valley improves to 7-6 overall and in the GLIAC, while Michigan Tech falls to 7-8 overall and 4-8 in the GLIAC.
The Cardinals will return to action this Sunday (Oct. 14) for a home match against Lake Superior State University beginning at 10:00 AM.
