FINDLAY, Ohio - The Saginaw Valley State University tennis team snapped their three-game losing streak by defeating the University of Findlay today (Oct. 5), 8-1.
The Lady Cardinals started off the contest in dominating fashion as they swept all three doubles matches. Yunjiao Shangguan (Chengdu, China / Shiyang HS) and Kelli Close (Midland, Mich. / Dow HS) were victorious in their No. 1 doubles match by an 8-3 tally, while Meghan Woody (Midland, Mich. / Dow HS) and Erin Doud (Northville, Mich.) won their No. 2 doubles match over the Oilers by the same score.
Katie Piorkowski (Essexville, Mich. / Garber HS) and Charlotte Wong (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island / Colonel Gray Senior High) rounded out the SVSU doubles play with an 8-4 victory as the Cardinals took a big 3-0 lead into singles play.
Yunjiao Shangguan would lead SVSU at No. 1 singles with a 6-0, 6-1 victory, while Meghan Woody tallied a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles. Charlotte Wong continued the strong play for the Cardinals as she came out on top with a 6-2, 6-2 decision in No. 3 singles.
In No. 4 singles, Erin Doud posted yet another victory in her young career with a 6-2, 6-3 mark over her Oiler opponent, while Theresa Frederick (Saginaw, Mich. / Bay City Western HS) notched a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles.
Katie Piorkowski was resilient in her No. 6 singles match as she won her opening set 6-1 before falling 6-4 in the second to force a tiebreaker. Piorkowski fell in a closely-contested battle, 10-8.
Sean Potter (Cadillac, Mich.) also participated in an exhibition match which she won by an 8-0 decision.
The victory brings the Cardinals to 6-4 on the season and in the GLIAC, while the Oilers fall to 1-8.
Saginaw Valley will return to the court tomorrow morning (Oct. 6) when they travel to Wayne State to battle the Warriors at 10:00 AM.
