Cardinals Impressive Against Cavaliers in Season Opener, 9-0

MIDLAND, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's tennis team started their 2012 season in impressive fashion today (Sept. 7) by defeating the Walsh Cavaliers, 9-0. The scheduled home match for SVSU was moved to the Midland Community Tennis Center due to potential inclement weather.

Senior Yunjiao Shangguan (Chengdu, China / Shiyang HS) and freshman Kelli Close (Midland, Mich. / H.H. Dow HS) got the Cardinals rolling in their No. 1 doubles match, defeating their opponents 8-4.  The following duo's of Meghan Woody (Midland, Mich. / Dow HS) and Erin Doud (Northville, Mich. / Northville HS) in No. 2 doubles and Charlotte Wong (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island / Colonel Gray Senior High) and Katie Piorkowski (Northville, Mich. / Northville HS) in No. 3 doubles would also go on to win their matches, both by a score of 8-4. 

In singles play it would be Doud leading the way for Saginaw Valley, dominating her No. 5 singles match 6-2, 6-0.  Right behind her was Theresa Frederick (Northville, Mich. / Northville HS) in No. 6 singles match posting an impressive win of 6-3, 6-4 over Jaclyn DeDomenico. 

Also helping the Cardinals would be Shangguan in No. 1 singles, defeating her opponent 6-4, 6-2, and Close in No. 3 singles, winning her match 6-2, 6-4.  Sophomore Woody and junior Wong would both go on to win their singles matches as well: Woody 6-3, 4-6, 10-7 and Wong 6-1, 6-2.

With the win, the Cardinals improve to 1-0 overall on the season and 1-0 in the GLIAC, while the Cavaliers fall to 0-1 overall and 0-1 in GLIAC. 

Saginaw Valley will return to action tomorrow (Sept. 8), in a home match against Malone University at 10:00 AM.
