AURORA, Ill. - The Saginaw Valley State
University volleyball team completed a sweep at the 2010 Mizuno
GLVC/GLIAC Crossover Tournament with a pair of victories over
Illinois-Springfield (3-0) and Drury (3-0) on Saturday, following
Friday's 3-1 victory over St. Joseph's. The Cardinals improve
to 10-8 overall on the season following Saturday's victories.
In the first match against Illinois-Springfield, the Cardinals
won by scores of 25-20, 25-15 and 25-16, respectively.
Chili's "Player of the Match" Laura Ward (White
Lake, Mich./Lakeland HS) played stellar defense for SVSU, recording
a match-high 15 digs. Annie Buxton
(Aurora, Ont./Aurora SS) had a match-high 17 kills to go along with
four aces and six digs. Katie
Fitzgerald (Whitby, Ont./Sinclair SS) and Lyndsay
Reynolds (Saline, Mich.) each had seven kills for the Cardinals
as well, with Fitzgerald adding three blocks. Sam Breault (Bad
Axe, Mich.) had 32 assists for the Cardinals.
Against Drury, the Cardinals took the match with scores of
25-13, 29-27 and 25-21, respectively.
Fitzgerald earned Chili's "Player of the Match" honors after
posting 16 kills and hitting for an astounding .682 percentage.
Buxton had 12 kills while hitting .333 and Katie
Maciejewski (Laingsburg, Mich.) hit .529, posting 10 kills.
Laurel
Mattson (Lake Odessa, Mich./Lakewood HS) had a match-high 13
digs and Ward added 10. Breault had 41 helpers for SVSU,
which hit .354 as a team.
The Cardinals are back in action next Friday (10/22) and
Saturday (10/23), as they take a swing through the Upper Peninsula
to take-on Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan, respectively.
