UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team extended its unbeaten start to the season with a 4–1 home win over Roosevelt University on Saturday afternoon at Robert C. Braddock Field.
The Cardinals (5-0-3, 4-0-0 GLIAC) struck first in the 23rd minute when Matty Telfer (Newcastle, England / Sunderland College) found the back of the net after Ryan Bovee's (Clarkston, Mich. / Clarkston HS) cross was headed into the air by Lui Ingavi (Kapsara, Kenya / Montverde Academy), both assisting the goal. Less than seven minutes later, SVSU doubled its advantage as Eoin Farrell (Athy, Ireland / Ardscoil na Tríonóide) converted a penalty in the 30th minute. Roosevelt was able to cut into the lead before halftime, scoring in the 35th minute.
After halftime, the Cardinals put the match away. Farrell struck again in the 50th minute from the penalty spot for his second goal of the day and third in two matches, all from the penalty spot. In the 54th minute, Telfer completed his brace on a finish assisted by Logan Kunnen (Jenison, Mich. / Unity Christian HS) to make it 4–1.
SVSU dominated possession and chances, outshooting Roosevelt 16–7 overall with a 7–5 edge in shots on target. The Cardinals earned four corner kicks to the Lakers' zero in the first half as they tied in corner opportunities with five each. Nick Kay (Walled Lake, Mich. / Walled Lake Central HS) made four saves—all in the second half—to secure the win.
SVSU was whistled for 19 fouls, while Roosevelt committed eight. The match saw six yellow cards, including three to each side.
