ALLENDALE, Mich. – Saginaw Valley State University women's golf finished seventh out of 16 teams at the Gilda's Club Laker Fall Invite hosted by Grand Valley State from Saturday, September 26 through Monday, September 28 at The Meadows Golf Course.
The Cardinals finished the three-round tournament with a team total of 953 (+89). SVSU improved throughout the weekend, opening with a 327 (+39) before shooting 316 (+28) in the second round and closing with its best round of the tournament, a 310 (+22).
Christina Nagy (Macedonia, Ohio, Nordonia HS) led Saginaw Valley and tied for 10th out of 93 golfers with a three-round total of 230 (+14). Nagy improved each day, opening with a 79 (+7), following with a 77 (+5), and firing a two-over 74 in Monday's final round. She carded five birdies during the tournament and finished tied for fourth in the field in par-five scoring at one-under.
Marissa GeRue (Fort Wayne, Ind., Carroll HS) followed with a 235 (+19) to tie for 23rd. GeRue also lowered her score in each round, shooting 81 (+9), 78 (+6), and 76 (+4). Her final round was highlighted by a pair of birdies as she closed the tournament with her best round of the weekend.
Alivia Ligrow (Pinckney, Mich., Pinckney Community HS) tied for 54th with a three-round total of 246 (+30). Ligrow opened with an 83 (+11) before recording her best round of the tournament on Sunday with a 78 (+6). She finished with an 85 (+13) in the final round.
Anna McCubbins placed 65th with a total of 251 (+35). McCubbins shot rounds of 84 (+12), 88 (+16), and 79 (+7), bouncing back with her best performance of the weekend on Monday. Her final round included five birdies, including four on the front nine.
Mayson Southland (Mona Shores, Mich., Mona Shores HS) rounded out the Cardinal lineup in 76th with a 256 (+40). After opening with a 92 (+20), Southland improved by nine strokes in the second round with an 83 (+11) before closing with an 81 (+9) on Monday.
As a team, Saginaw Valley finished fifth in the field in par-five scoring at +16 and eighth in par-four scoring at +89. The Cardinals totaled 17 birdies to tie for eighth among the 16 teams and recorded 129 pars to tie for ninth.
Up Next: Saginaw Valley women's golf heads to the William Beall Fall Classic hosted by Findlay next week. They play a familiar course for the team in the Findlay Country Club after competing on the course last year in the Midwest Regionals. The two-day tournament takes place on Monday, October 5 and Tuesday, October 6 in Findlay, Ohio.
