HAMMOND, Ind. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team battled Purdue Northwest to a 0-0 draw Thursday afternoon at Pepsi Field.
The Cardinals (3-1-3, 1-1-1 GLIAC) held a 9-4 advantage in shots and put three attempts on goal while recording their second clean sheet in three conference matches.
Neither side was able to generate much offensively during the opening 45 minutes. Purdue Northwest recorded all three shots of the first half, with Nick Kay (Walled Lake, Mich., Walled Lake Central HS) making a save in the 16th minute to keep the match scoreless.
The Cardinals flipped the momentum after halftime, outshooting the Pride 9-1 over the final 45 minutes.
Matty Telfer (Newcastle, England, Sunderland College) created one of SVSU's best opportunities in the 55th minute when his attempt struck the left post. Eight minutes later, Noah Jackson (Redford, Mich., North Farmington HS) also hit the woodwork as the Cardinals continued to search for the opening goal.
SVSU put three shots on target during the second half. Jo Bédard (Québec City, Canada, St. Andrew's School) forced a save in the 60th minute before Telfer had attempts stopped in the 65th and 86th minutes. Telfer led the Cardinals with four shots, including two on goal, while Bédard finished with two attempts.
The Cardinal defense held Purdue Northwest without a shot on goal over the final 74 minutes. Kay finished with one save over 90 minutes to secure the clean sheet.
Saginaw Valley finished with a 9-4 advantage in shots and a 3-1 edge in shots on goal. Both sides recorded five corner kicks.
