KENOSHA, Wis. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team played to its second consecutive scoreless draw Sunday afternoon, finishing 0-0 against Parkside at Wood Road Field.
The Cardinals (3-1-4, 1-1-2 GLIAC) earned a point for the second time on their weekend road trip after also playing Purdue Northwest to a 0-0 draw Thursday. SVSU held an 18-14 advantage in shots against the Rangers, with both teams putting five attempts on goal.
Parkside generated the majority of the opportunities in the opening half, outshooting Saginaw Valley 9-5. Nick Kay (Walled Lake, Mich., Walled Lake Central HS) made two saves during the opening 45 minutes to keep the match scoreless heading into halftime.
The Cardinals flipped the momentum after the break and outshot the Rangers 13-5 over the final 45 minutes. Matty Telfer (Newcastle, England, Sunderland College) forced a save just 65 seconds into the half before Jo Bédard (Québec City, Canada, St. Andrew's School) struck the woodwork in the 48th minute.
Amadou Kouyate (Ann Arbor, Mich., Community HS) continued to pressure the Parkside defense throughout the second half. Kouyate put attempts on goal in the 58th and 70th minutes before forcing another save in the 83rd. He finished with a match-high five shots and three on goal.
SVSU continued to search for the winner in the closing minutes. Bédard had an attempt stopped in the 86th minute before Adrian Hatman (Hîncesti, Moldova, Lucian Blaga) recorded the final shot of the match with 23 seconds remaining.
Kay finished with four saves to record his second consecutive shutout and preserve the draw. The Cardinal defense held Parkside to just five second-half shots after the Rangers recorded nine in the opening period.
Saginaw Valley finished with an 18-14 advantage in shots and held a 6-2 edge in corner kicks. Telfer recorded three shots, while Bédard and Hatman each added two.
