BAY CITY, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University golf programs competed in their first ever Battle for the Bay against Northwood Friday, September 11. The Cardinals and the Timberwolves played 18 holes of match play at the Bay City Country Club with 13 matches for the men and seven matches for the women. The women won 6-1 and the men fell 7.5-5.5 for an aggregate score of 11.5-8.5 in favor of SVSU.
AJ Gasper had the best round for the men shooting 70 (-2) with eight birdies and five pars. He won his match by two strokes and was joined by Garrett Morrison (Flushing, Mich., Flushing HS), Ben Liddell, and Bradly VanDamme (Gladstone, Mich., Mid Peninsula HS) with match wins. Morrison and Liddell both shot 74 (+2) while VanDamme shot 78 (+6) as Morrison and VanDamme won by three strokes and Liddell won by two.
Tony Spicuzza (Grandville, Mich., Grandville HS), Matthew Murdock, and Dominik Dostal (Bloomfield Hills, Mich., Bloomfield Hills HS) all tied their matches for the other 1.5 team points. Spicuzza carded a 72 (E), Murdock carded a 73 (+1), and Dostal carded a 74 (+2).
On the women's side, Averie Pumford (Freeland, Mich., Freeland HS) led with a 72 (E) and won her match by 14 strokes. Pumford carded four birdies and 10 pars on the round. Anna McCubbins, Marissa GeRue (Fort Wayne, Ind., Carroll HS), Christina Nagy (Macedonia, Ohio, Nordonia HS), Mayson Southland (Mona Shores, Mich., Mona Shores HS), and Madison Webb all won their matches as well. McCubbins shot 74 (+2) and GeRue shot 75 (+3) as both won by six strokes. Nagy carded a 76 (+4) and won her match by five strokes. Southland had the closest win shooting 77 (+5) to win by three strokes while Webb had the largest lead shooting 81 (+9) and winning by 22 strokes.
