Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Drops a Pair to Warriors

DETROIT, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team dropped a pair of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) games on the road to the Wayne State University Warriors.  The Warriors claimed the first game by a score of 15-0 and overcame a late 1-0 SVSU lead to grab a 3-1 win in game number two.

The teams altered their weekend series to include just a doubleheader on Sunday (Mar. 30) due to bad weather being forecasted for Saturday.

Game One

Wayne State jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead after one inning of play and increased it to 5-0 after two innings.  The Warriors would score two runs in the fourth, five in the fifth and three in their half of the sixth to make the run tally 15.  WSU starter Kyle Zimmerman held the Cardinals in check all game at the plate, allowing just a single hit in six innings.

Junior Brad Schalk had the only hit of the game for Saginaw Valley, as he had a single in the top of the fourth inning. Sophomore Dylan Wisniewski took the loss on the mound, as he gave up five runs (1 earned) in only 2 1/3 innings.

Game Two

Things were looking up in game two, as SVSU scored a run in the top of the second inning to grab their first lead of the day.  The run crossed when sophomore Tyler Schwanz had an RBI single to score sophomore Richard Guglielmi.

The 1-0 lead held true up until the bottom of the sixth inning.  That's when the Warriors plated three runs with two outs, grabbing a 3-1 advantage.

The Cards couldn't respond in their half of the seventh and the 3-1 score would prove to be the final.

Schwanz had two base knocks in the game while junior Chris Perkovich reached base on a bunt single.

Junior Andrew Geese suffered the loss, as he threw six innings, striking-out six batters.

Saginaw Valley (4-12, 1-5 GLIAC) is off until Tuesday (Apr. 1), when the Cardinals travel to the University of Findlay for a three game mid-week series that is set to begin at 2:00 pm.
