UNIVERSITY CENTER - The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer program recently hosted a fun event during its match against the Malone University Pioneers on Friday, October 10th.

The team, in conjunction with the Athletics Department and Office of International and Advanced Studies, hosted the First Annual International Day.  After an encouraging 2-0 halftime lead over Malone, the Men's Soccer team retired to its sideline. Then it was time for a procession of SVSU international students, who had previously served as the rambunctious student section, to take the field.

Our first annual International Student Day recognized an assortment of students from 14 different countries. These students' pride shined bright as they hoisted their flags over their head once their name and country was announced by International Student Advisor, Pat Shelley. Following their introductions and moment of fame at midfield, the students posed for pictures before participating in a juggling contest. 

"The international student club was excited to be at the soccer game and at some points could be heard leading the 'SV-SU' cheer," stated Shelley.  "We were also thankful for the acknowledgement of appreciation from the international players on the team including the participation of the women's team international players during the halftime of the men's game.  In all 14 countries, including the U.S. were involved."

SVSU Men's Soccer Head Coach Cale Wassermann added his thoughts on the great event...

"It was great to have so many students and countries represented at our game! We have five nternational players.....and our game is so global that it made sense to have such an event during one of our contests. The diversity on this campus is something special and anytime we can showcase that it is a great feeling for all involved, we look forward to even more representation next year!"
