Saint Leo, Fla. - The Saginaw Valley State
University volleyball team split its final two matches at the 2010
Saint Leo Lion Classic, hosted by Saint Leo University. The
Cardinals fell to Pittsburg State University (Kan.) by a 3-0 count
before rebounding for a 3-1 victory over West Georgia
University. The 1-1 record puts SVSU at 2-2 overall on the
season.
The first match saw scores of 28-26, 25-21 and 25-12, all
falling in Pittsburg State's favor.
Junior Katie
Fitzgerald (Whitby, Ont./Sinclair SS) hit .400 in the match,
recording seven kills while adding a pair of blocks. Junior
Annie
Buxton (Aurora, Ont./Aurora SS) had 11 kills and eight digs for
the Cardinals. Senior Jessica Treiber
(Sebewaing, Mich./USA HS) had five kills and two blocks while
hitting at a .308 clip for the contest. Junior Laura Ward (White
Lake, Mich./Lakeland HS) also had eight digs for SVSU.
Freshman Nicole
Adam (Sterling Heights, Mich.) had a team-high 14
assists.
In the victory over West Georgia, the Cards took the first two
sets by scores of 25-21 and 25-19, respectively. West Georgia
bounced-back to claim the third set, 25-21. SVSU, however,
would close-out the match with a 25-22 win.
Fitzgerald hit .471 with 10 kills and four blocks in the finale,
while Buxton had 17 kills and 11 digs. Treiber also had
double-digit kills with 11 and six blocks, while freshman Lyndsay
Reynolds (Saline, Mich.) had 10 digs for the Cardinals.
Sophomore setter Sam Breault (Bad Axe, Mich.) posted a
career-high 41 assists in the contest. Junior Becky Schroeder
(Owosso, Mich./Northwood University) had eight total blocks for
SVSU.
The Cardinals return to action Friday, Sep. 10, when they host
Michigan Tech University in a 7:00 pm match-up to open Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.
