Volleyball Ends Season With 3-0 Victory Over Northwood

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball team ended its 2010 season with a 3-0 victory over visiting Northwood University on Sunday afternoon (11/7).  The victory gives the Cardinals a final record of 14-12 overall and 9-10 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contests while Northwood falls to 13-13 overall and 10-9 in the GLIAC.

The match was a back-and-forth affair, as the Cards and Timberwolves exchanged points throughout the first two sets, with SVSU taking both frames by scores of 26-24 and 25-23, respectively.  SVSU would then close things out with a 25-19 victory in the third and final set.

The Cardinals hit .324 for the match, including a .448 mark in the third set, and out-blocked the Timberwolves, 9-3.

Senior Jessica Treiber (Sebewaing, Mich./USA HS) earned Chili's "Player of the Match" honors in the final contest of her career, posting a match-high 15 kills while hitting for a .560 percentage to lead the offensive charge.  Junior Annie Buxton (Aurora, Ont./Aurora SS) also had 15 kills, hitting .364 in the match.  Junior Katie Fitzgerald (Whitby, Ont./Sinclair SS) had nine kills while hitting at a .444 clip and adding three blocks.  Sophomore Sam Breault (Bad Axe, Mich.) had 38 assists and four blocks.  Junior Laura Ward (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland HS) had a match-high 10 digs in the contest.

The Cardinals finished the season as the #9 overall seed in the GLIAC, missing out on a GLIAC Tournament berth by a single game behind both Northwood and Ashland.  Northwood moves on to the Tournament as the #7 seed, and will travel to play #2 seed Grand Valley State in a GLIAC Tournament Quarterfinal match-up.
