Cards Fall In Fourth-Consecutive Double Overtime Contest

CANTON, Ohio - Saginaw Valley State's women's soccer program participated in its fourth-consecutive double overtime contest today (Sept. 20) on the first half of its weekend road trip to Ohio.  The Cardinals, after grabbing a 1-0 lead against Malone University, ended up falling by a 2-1 final score in their first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match of 2013.

Junior Kelsey Burt (Marengo, Ohio/Highland HS) got SVSU the early 1-0 lead only 8:49 into the game, using a feed from freshman Jennifer Goethals (Rochester, Mich./Rochester HS) to notch her first goal of the season.

The 1-0 lead would hold through halftime, but the Pioneers used a Christine Najjar goal to tie the match at one goal-apiece 18 minutes into the second period.

Both teams remained scoreless until minute-marker 102:33, when Brianna Smith scored for Malone, sealing the victory for the home squad.

The Cardinals out-shot their opponent once again, this time by a margin of 32-9.  SVSU posted a 16-4 edge in shots-on-goal.

With the loss, Saginaw Valley falls to 2-2-1 overall in 2013 and 0-1 in the GLIAC while Malone improves to 3-1-1 overall and 1-0 in league play.

The second part of SVSU's weekend road trip keeps them in Canton, as the Cardinals play Walsh University on Sunday (Sept. 22) in a 1:00 pm contest.
