Kaitlyn Geurink Highlights GLIAC Awards Winning Freshman of the Year

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball freshman forward Kaitlyn Geurink (Hamilton, Mich. / Hamilton HS) was named the GLIAC Freshman of the Year. Geurink is the sixth Cardinal to earn Freshman of the Year honors and the first since Kaitlyn Zarycki in 2019-20. She is joined by Lydia Meredith (Portland, Mich. / Portland St. Patrick's HS) and Megan McCalla (Chelsea, Mich. / Chelsea HS), who both earned Second-Team All-GLIAC honors. Meredith was also selected to the All-GLIAC Defensive Team.

Interim head coach Dylan Liddell had this to say about the team and the season:

"Our team showed an inspiring level of heart, togetherness, and toughness to be able to finish the season the way that we did. These three award-winning ladies certainly embraced and embodied those qualities!"

Geurink started all but one game for the Cardinals and averaged 10.1 points and 3.9 rebounds per game. She shot 41.8 percent from the field and 29.5 percent from beyond the arc, totaling 284 points, 108 rebounds, 22 assists, 16 steals, and five blocks. The Hamilton, Michigan native broke out in the fifth game of the season with a season-high 24 points against Wingate. She surpassed 20 points again with 22 against Purdue Northwest in January and scored in double figures 15 times this season. Geurink also grabbed 11 rebounds against Thomas More while scoring 15 points for her lone double-double of the year.

Liddell said this about Geurink and her freshman season,

"Kaitlyn started almost every game for our team as a true freshman, which is certainly not an easy task given the natural adjustments necessary to play college basketball. She finished the year third on our team in scoring and second in minutes played, greatly in part due to her versatility to play and guard multiple positions. This is also our program's first Freshman of the Year award since the 2019-2020 season. We're super excited to see what the future holds for Kaitlyn!"

Meredith earned her third straight All-GLIAC Defensive Team honor and her first career Second-Team All-GLIAC selection. She started all 27 games in which she appeared and averaged 12.2 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 3.6 steals, and 0.4 blocks per game. As of March 6, 2026, Meredith ranks sixth in Division II in steals per game and first in the GLIAC. The senior finished her four-year career with 804 points, 507 rebounds, 272 assists, 267 steals, and 35 blocks. She ranks seventh in program history in steals.

Meredith scored in double figures 17 times this year and posted a career-high 27 points against Walsh on December 17. She grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds against Roosevelt on January 31 and pulled down 12 boards against Drury in the third game of the season for her lone double-double of 2025-26.

Liddell shared this about Meredith,

"Lydia was the ultimate impact player for — as well as the heart and soul of — our team this year. I've never coached a player who impacted the game in so many different ways. Lydia was everywhere! She finished the year second on our team in scoring, first in rebounding, first in assists, and first in steals. This is Lydia's third time being selected to the GLIAC All-Defensive Team, and it's certainly no surprise why. She eclipsed career totals such as 500 rebounds, 250 assists, and 250 steals throughout this season. We're so proud of the way Lydia was able to finish her career. She absolutely earned the honor of being selected to two different All-Conference teams this year!"

McCalla started all 28 games for the Cardinals and finished seventh in the GLIAC in scoring. She led SVSU with 421 total points, surpassed the 1,000-career-point mark, and finished her junior season with 1,027 career points. The Chelsea, Michigan native averaged 15.0 points, 4.9 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 0.8 steals per game. McCalla scored in double figures 23 times this season, including a season-high 24 points against Purdue Northwest in the game that pushed her past the 1,000-point milestone.

Liddell said this about McCalla,

"Megan showed incredible leadership down the stretch for our group, leading by example with both her voice and her play. She finished the year as our team leader in scoring through her ability to score in the post and from the perimeter. She was also second on our team in rebounding and first in offensive rebounding, gaining us many extra possessions. Megan reaching the 1,000-point mark for her career as just a junior and now being recognized with her second All-GLIAC honor, shows the major impact she has had and continues to have on SVSU Women's Basketball."
