Cardinals’ Offense Scores Season-High 91 Points in Win Over Purdue Northwest
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball team had its highest scoring game of the season en route to a 91-79 win over Purdue Northwest. The Cardinals (4-8, 2-2) had a season-high five players score double-digit points in the game.
 
"It was a very good team win, and a very eye-opening experience for them, to understand that they can trust each other," said head coach Jenny Pruett. "It doesn't have to be one or two people scoring, that we all can make a difference in the game."
 
Meijer Player of the Game, Kaitlyn Geurink (Hamilton, Mich. / Hamilton HS), led the team with 22 points and also recorded four rebounds and an assist. She shot 72.7% from the floor in the win.
 
Megan McCalla (Chelsea, Mich. / Chelsea HS) and Lainey Yater (McDonald, Pa. / South Fayette HS) scored the first two baskets of the afternoon for SVSU to take a 4-2 lead. The Cardinals never trailed again in the remainder of the game. Both of those players finished with five rebounds, while McCalla finished with 12 points, and Yater finished with seven. Geurink and Lauren Borsenik (Hemlock, Mich. / Hemlock HS) co-led with nine points, giving the Cardinals a 48-45 edge at the break.
 
Guerink added 13 points in the second half as SVSU stretched its lead to as much as 14 in the fourth quarter. Lydia Meredith (Portland, Mich. / Portland St. Patrick's HS) finished second on the team with 17 points and six rebounds while also adding a game-high four steals. Kacie Bush (Columbia, Tenn. / Morristown HS) came off the bench for the Cardinals and scored eight points in the second half. She recorded three career-highs with 11 points, a team-high seven rebounds, and one block.
 
Saginaw Valley State found success on the boards, out-rebounding Purdue Northwest, 39-19. The Cardinals also got 12 offensive rebounds and scored 15 second-chance points compared to PNW's two. SVSU also had its best shooting day of the season and shot over 50% from the field for the second time, going 34-of-60 (56.7%).
