UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball team bounced back with a big win over Walsh, 73-65. The Cardinals (3-6) jumped out to an 11-2 lead and never trailed at James E. O'Neill Arena.
Meijer Player of the Game, Lydia Meredith (Portland, Mich. / Portland St. Patrick's HS), led the team with a double-double and was one rebound off of a triple-double, recording a career high in points and steals, finishing with 27 points, 10 steals, and nine boards.
The Cardinals scored the first seven points of the game. Megan McCalla (Chelsea, Mich. / Chelsea HS) scored the first basket before Chloe Kilbride (Perrysburg, Ohio / Perrysburg HS) hit a three on the next possession in her first career start. McCalla led the team in the first half with 10 points and finished the game with 21. SVSU took a nine point lead into halftime.
In the second half, the Cardinals started hot again, building their lead to its highest point of twelve with back-to-back buckets from McCalla. SVSU saw their lead get cut down to three in the fourth quarter but ended up pulling away behind great defense from Meridith and Lauren Borsenik (Hemlock Mich. / Hemlock HS). Borsenik shot 100% from the field and finished the game with 11 points, six rebounds, and two blocks. Meredith went 10-for-10 from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter.
SVSU had their best shooting day of the season, shooting 53.2% from the floor. They outscored the Cavaliers in the paint, 46-32, and outrebounded them, 35-31. The Cardinals also had a season high 12 steals and forced 19 turnovers.
UP NEXT: Saginaw Valley State will face off against Hillsdale on Saturday, December 20, at 1:00 PM (ET) in O'Neill Arena to close out non-conference play.
