UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University softball team dropped a pair of conference contests to GLIAC foe Ferris State University today (Apr. 25) at home. The Cardinals fell in game one by a score of 2-1 before dropping game two 6-3.
Game One vs Ferris State - Box Score
Ferris State broke a scoreless tie with the Cardinals in the top of the fourth inning scoring two runs on two hits.
The Cardinals rallied in the bottom of the fifth inning when Kari Knight (Walled Lake, Mich. / Central HS) led off the inning with a double to right center. Pinch runner Shelby Weeks (Warren, Mich. / Woods Tower HS) scored Saginaw Valley's lone run on a passed ball to cut the Ferris lead to 2-1.
The Bulldog defense held the Saginaw Valley offense in check the rest of the game as they went on to win by a score of 2-1.
Jillian Williamson (Sebewaing, Mich. / USA HS) took the complete game loss for the Cardinals allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out three Ferris State batters.
Game Two vs Ferris State - Box Score
The Cardinals jumped out to an early 2-0 advantage over the Bulldogs in the top of the second inning. Junior Lindsay Hayward (Ancaster, Ont.) led off the inning with a walk and would advance to second on a bunt single by Ashley Beal (Milan, Mich.). Kailah Happ (Waterford, Mich. / Kettering HS) followed suit with a rip to center field that plated Hayward. An error later in the inning allowed Beal to score from third base and end the SVSU scoring.
The Bullddogs added two runs of their own on four hits to even the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the third inning.
Saginaw Valley jumped back out in front in the top of the fourth inning when Beal crossed the plate on a passed ball. Beal reached earlier in the inning on a fielding error by the third baseman.
Ferris State scored four runs over the next two innings to go up by a final score of 6-3.
Williamson took the loss for the Cardinals throwing her second complete game of the afternoon.
With the losses, Saginaw Valley falls to 12-20 overall on the season and 8-10 in the GLIAC while Ferris State improves to 22-12 overall and 14-6 in the conference. The Cardinals will return to action on Friday (Apr. 26) when they welcome Lake Superior State University to the SVSU Softball Complex. The games are scheduled to start at 3 pm.
