KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Saginaw Valley State University softball team dropped their first two games at the Rebel Spring Games. They fell in the opening game to Quincy by a score of 9-8, before dropping their second game to Concordia St. Paul 5-0.
Game One vs. Quincy - Box Score
The Cardinals jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage in the top of the second inning when Lindsay Hayward (Ancaster, Ont.) led off the inning with a solo home run to left center.
Quincy would respond with five runs in the bottom of the second inning to push starter Chelsea Davis (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) from the game as they built a 7-1 lead.
Saginaw Valley would rally with three runs in the top of the fifth inning. Jordan Randall (Clinton Twp, Mich.) would plate Kaitlyn McBride (Brampton, Ont. / St. Thomas Aquinas HS) on a line drive to left field. Randall and Amanda Kimes (Caledonia, Mich.) would then both cross the plate on a deep double to center field by Marcy Medina (Valparaiso, Ind. / Wheeler HS) to help the Cardinal cut the Lady Hawks advantage to 7-4.
Jenna Holmes (Jenison, Mich.) would try and jump start the offense with a solo home run to left center in the sixth inning, but Saginaw Valley would be unable to add any additional runs in the sixth. The Lady Hawks would add a run in the bottom of the inning to increase their lead to 8-5.
Medina would get a Cardinal rally started in the top of the seventh with a single up the middle. Kari Knight (Walled Lake, Mich. / Northern HS) would follow suit with another single up the middle to set the stage for Hayward's second big blast of the game. This one was a three-run shot to tie the game at 8-8.
The Cardinals would be unable to hold on in the bottom of the seventh, allowing Quincy to score the winning run on a walk off single to fall by a final score of 9-8.
Sarah Vrabel (Canfield, Ohio) took the loss for the Cardinals, pitching the final 3.1 innings of action.
Game Two vs. Concordia St. Paul - Box Score
After three scoreless innings the Golden Bears were able to take a 1-0 lead over the Cardinals on ball that got away from catcher Ashley Beal (Milan, Mich.).
Concordia would add four more runs in the top of the seventh inning as they went on to the 5-0 victory.
Randall's single through the right side in the bottom of the first would be the Cardinals only hit for the game.
Jillian Williamson (Unionville/Sebewaing, Mich. / Unionville Sebewaing Area HS) took the loss in the circle for the Cardinals, striking out seven batters in the complete game effort.
