CONCORDIA, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University softball team took two games form Concordia University Saturday (Mar. 20), beating them 12-0 in the first game and 15-7 in the second.
Game 1
Saginaw Valley returned to the diamond for the first time since the Rebel Spring Games in Florida last week. The Cardinals came out swinging, scoring in every inning of the first game.
Senior Angela Kaiser (Waterford, Mich. / Our Lady of the Lakes HS) would get the scoring started for Saginaw Valley as she ripped a shot up the middle that scored Lauren Memmer (Lakeland, Mich. / Lakeland HS) and Ashley Jordan (Freeland, Mich. / Freeland HS). The Cardinals would tack on three more runs in the second inning to give them a five run advantage. Jordan reached first on a fielder's choice and scored Memmer. Junior Jill Peterson (Freeland, Mich. / Freeland HS) had a hit to left field that scored Jordan and Billi Hoeppner (Hemlock, Mich. / Hemlock HS).
Saginaw Valley continued to build on its lead in the third, where they scored one run on a double to center field off the bat of Kailah Happ (Waterford, Mich. / Waterford Kettering HS), scoring Jordan Stuart (Richmond, Mich. / Richmond HS). In the fourth inning, Happ drove in three runs on a triple through the left side of the field, while Shannon McLaughlin (Benton Harbor, Mich. / KVCC) singled to the left side of the field and scored Happ.
Jade Fulton (Byron, Mich. / Byron HS) got the start in the circle throwing three innings with six strikeouts and allowing only two hits, while Memmer came in and pitched one inning with three strikeouts. Amanda Astor came in and closed the game and posted one strikeout. The Cardinals totaled 16 hits in the first game.
Game 2
Saginaw Valley started right where they left off in game two, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. Kaiser put the Cardinals on the board first with a single up the middle scoring Jordan and Hoeppner. Kim Sills (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Chippewa Valley HS) reached first on an error and Kaiser came around to score on the error. Concordia answered back, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first giving them the 5-4 advantage.
Saginaw Valley came back in the fourth when they scored six runs to take the lead for the rest of the game. Sills doubled to right field, scoring two runs, while Kalie Burdick (Milford, Mich. / Milford HS) hit a sacrifice fly to center field scoring one. Jordan singled to center field and scored one, and Peterson singled to right field scoring one for the Cardinals.
Concordia would try to come back one more time as they scored a two run homerun in the bottom of the fourth inning to make the 12-7. The Cardinals tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game with a score of 15-7.
Kari Bowlby (Elkhart, Mich. / Elkhart HS) started the game for Saginaw Valley, striking out one. Megan Samassa (Holly, Mich. / Powers Catholic HS) pitched 2.1 innings of relief while picking up the win and striking out three , while Dana Velzy pitched two innings.
Saginaw Valley improves to 13-2 on the season. The Cardinals will travel to Ferris State on March 31 to begin GLIAC play for the 2010 season. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 3:00 pm.
