Cardinals Score Twice in Quick Succession to Defeat Purdue Northwest

HAMMOND, Ind. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team used a dramatic second-half rally to defeat Purdue Northwest 2–1 on Sunday afternoon at Pepsi Field.

The Cardinals (8–2–4, 7–2–1 GLIAC) trailed early after the Pride struck in the second minute, but SVSU responded with two goals just moments apart in the second half to claim victory.

Purdue Northwest opened the scoring 67 seconds into the match when Landon Potts finished a setup from Marco Ussi to put the hosts ahead 1–0. Despite outshooting the Pride 11–5, the Cardinals couldn't find an equalizer until the 55th minute.

After a hand ball in the box was called, Eoin Farrell (Athy, Ireland / Ardscoil na Tríonóide) converted on a penalty kick to level the match at 1–1 in the 55th minute. Just moments later, the Cardinals jumped over the resuming kickoff, moved up the field on the right side, and a cross from Matty Telfer (Newcastle, England / Sunderland College) was headed in by Lui Ingavi (Kapsara, Kenya / Montverde Academy) to take the 2-1 lead.

SVSU controlled possession and tempo throughout, finishing with an 11–5 advantage in shots and a 7–2 edge in shots on goal. The Cardinals also held a 5–1 margin in corner kicks and forced five saves from the Purdue Northwest keeper. Nick Kay (Walled Lake, Mich. / Walled Lake Central HS) earned the win in goal for SVSU with one save.
