UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. — The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team avenged last week's 2-1 loss to Parkside with a 1-0 win over the Rangers (4-4-2, 4-2-1 GLIAC) on Braddock Field on Friday afternoon. The Cardinals (6-2-3, 5-2-0 GLIAC) outshot Parkside 25-3 to improve to 5-2 in conference play.
Matty Telfer (Newcastle, England / Sunderland College) led SVSU with six shots on net, including his first career game-winner.
The first half was a defensive struggle, with neither team breaking through. Parkside keeper Daniyal Rana saved both shots he faced, while Cardinal keeper Nick Kay (Walled Lake, Mich. / Walled Lake Central HS) made one save in the 38th minute, securing his fifth clean sheet.
In the second half, SVSU pressed, forcing Rana to save seven shots, including several rebound chances. In the 86th minute, Telfer's shot led to a corner, and he fired two more that Rana stopped, keeping the game scoreless.
The breakthrough came on a long ball from Logan Kunnen (Jenison, Mich. / Unity Christian HS), which was headed by Adrian Hatman (Chisinau, Moldova / ULIM) and bounced just outside the box to Eoin Farrell (Athy, Ireland / Hofstra University), who headed it into the box at Telfer's right foot. Telfer then one-timed the ball bottom left and scored with 2:15 left to play, and the Cardinals killed the clock to secure the win.
UP NEXT: SVSU will remain at home for a match against Northern Michigan on Sunday, October 19, at 11:00 a.m. (ET).
