MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season Friday afternoon, falling 1–0 to Northern Michigan at the NMU Soccer Field.
The Cardinals (5-1-3, 4-1-0 GLIAC) saw their unbeaten streak come to an end despite dominating much of the match. SVSU outshot Northern Michigan 31–10, putting 12 on goal, but could not find the back of the net. The Wildcats (4-2-3, 3-2-0 GLIAC) scored the lone goal in the 38th minute when Luca Rosen finished from close range off an assist from Ian Weimer.
SVSU created consistent pressure throughout both halves, generating 19 second-half shots and earning eight corner kicks to the Wildcats' two. Adrian Hatman (Chisinau, Moldova / U.L.I.M) led the Cardinals with seven shots, while Kolja Thomas (Butjadingen, Germany / Montana State Billings), Matty Telfer (Newcastle, England / Sunderland College), and Evan Baker (Frankenmuth, Mich. / Frankenmuth HS) each registered multiple shots on goal.
In net, Nick Kay (Walled Lake, Mich. / Walled Lake Central HS) made five saves—three in the first half and two after halftime—while facing 10 total shots. Northern Michigan goalkeeper Asaf Kristal proved the difference, turning aside all 12 SVSU attempts on target to secure the clean sheet.
The match grew physical with 30 combined fouls and four yellow cards, while NMU played a man down for the final 35 minutes after a red card in the 56th minute.
