ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team earned its second GLIAC win of the season on Sunday, shutting out St. Cloud State 3–0 at Husky Stadium.
The Cardinals (3-0-3, 2-0-0 GLIAC) broke through early in the second half when Narcis Gavalda (Rossell, Spain / IES La Senia) finished in the 50th minute off a setup from Evan Baker (Frankenmuth, Mich. / Frankenmuth HS). Liam Zimmerman (Clarkston, Mich. / Clarkston HS) extended the lead in the 71st minute, converting a pass from Taro Aboubakary (Yokohama, Japan / Seiwa Gakuen HS). Zimmerman struck again five minutes later, completing a brace after linking up with Matty Telfer (Newcastle, England / Sunderland College) and Ryan Bovee (Clarkston, Mich. / Clarkston HS).
SVSU controlled the match statistically, outshooting the Huskies 24–4 and placing nine on goal. Zimmerman totaled five shots, four on goal in his offensive leadership. Aboubakary, Bovee, Baker, Gavalda, and Logan Kunnen (Jenison, Mich. / Unity Christian HS) added a shot on goal each. The Cardinals held an 8–2 edge in corner kicks and committed just seven fouls to St. Cloud's three. Nick Kay (Walled Lake, Mich. / Walled Lake Central HS) made two saves, one in each half, to secure the clean sheet and his fourth shutout of the season and third in a row.
The first half ended scoreless despite SVSU generating 10 shots and five corner kicks. After halftime, the Cardinals quickly took control, scoring three times in a 26-minute span to put the match away.
