Cardinal Defense Posts Clean Sheet Against Davenport
CALEDONIA, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team kicked off GLIAC play with a win against Davenport Wednesday night. The Cardinals (2-0-3, 1-0-0 GLIAC) posted the clean sheet, holding the Panthers (1-3-1, 0-1-0 GLIAC). SVSU scored a goal in both halves while the defense held DU without a shot attempt in the first 45 minutes.
 
Adrian Mahoney (Brampton, Ontario / St Martin's HS) scored his first collegiate goal to open the scoring in the 43rd minute. It was a tight second half as Davenport pushed back and generated a few chances, the closest being a shot off target in the final 10 minutes of the game. Shortly afterward, Matty Telfer (Newcastle, England / Sunderland College) netted his second of the season and sealed the victory in the 86th minute. Taro Aboubakary (Yokohama, Japan / Seiwa Gakuen HS) assisted both goals in his first match as a Cardinal.
 
The Cardinals led in shots 18-4 and shots on goal 7-2. Nick Kay (Walled Lake, Mich. / Walled Lake Central HS) earned the clean sheet with two saves. It was a physical game with 30 combined fouls, 18 to SVSU, including two Cardinal yellow cards.
 
Up Next: Saginaw Valley men's soccer continues the road trip and heads to St. Cloud State on Sunday, September 28. Kickoff is set for 12:00 PM at SCSU Husky Stadium.
