Cardinals Battle Back with Goals from Ingavi and Thomas to Draw Illinois-Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team battled back from two goals down to earn a 2-2 draw against the University of Illinois-Springfield Sunday afternoon at Kiwanis Stadium.

The Cardinals (0-0-2) fell behind in the 13th minute on a penalty and again in the 23rd minute as UIS doubled its advantage. SVSU answered before halftime when Lui Ingavi (Kapsara, Kenya / Montverde Academy) struck from distance in the 40th minute to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The equalizer came early in the second half as Kolja Thomas (Butjadingen, Germany / Zinzendorschule Tossens) finished in the 53rd minute off a setup from Evan Baker (Frankenmuth, Mich. / Frankenmuth HS). It was Ingavi's first collegiate goal and Thomas's first as a Cardinal.

SVSU pushed for the winner, finishing with 18 total shots and 11 on frame. Ingavi led the attack with seven shots and five on target, while Liam Zimmerman (Clarkston, Mich. / Clarkston HS) added three shots, two on goal. Baker tallied four attempts with two on frame to go along with his assist.

In net, senior Nick Kay (Walled Lake, Mich. / Walled Lake Central HS) made two saves across 90 minutes.
