UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team defeated Adrian College today (Nov. 15) 71-55 in their home opener.
The Cardinals got out to a fast start, going up as many as 14 points with 1:27 left in the first half. Junior forward Dan Genther (Laingsburg, Mich.) led Saginaw Valley in scoring with 9 points while both Keithan Jackson (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Josh Eisenga (McBain, Mich.) pulled down three rebounds a piece.
The Cardinals would come out of the locker room strong by going up as many as 25 points with 10:59 left in the game. Senior guard Avery Stephenson (Romulus, Mich.) led Saginaw Valley with 13 points and three rebounds. As a team the Cardinals shot 10-for-15 from the free throw line.
Sophomore Greg Foster (Indianapolis, Ind. / T.C. Howe HS) ended the afternoon with 12 points and five rebounds, Stephenson had 15 points and five rebounds, and both Genther and Chris Webb (Saginaw, Mich. / Arthur Hills HS) had nine points. The Cardinals were 6-for-10 from the free throw line and 3-for-7 from beyond the arch in the second half.
With the win Saginaw Valley improves to 1-0 overall on the season, while Adrian falls to 0- 1 overall on the season. The Cardinals return to action on Wednesday (Nov. 18) when they host Rochester College. Tip off is at 7:00 pm.
