KICK-OFF
Saginaw Valley State University football looks to win two in a row in the GLIAC with a home game against Roosevelt this weekend.
The Cardinals (2-3, 1-0 GLIAC) cruised to a 47-25 homecoming win over Northern Michigan at Wickes Memorial Stadium. The Cardinals (2-3, 1-0 GLIAC) start league play 1-0 and extend their winning streak to eight over the Wildcats (0-4, 0-2 GLIAC).
Terrence Brown Jr. (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King HS) led SVSU receivers with eight catches for 155 yards and two scores. The receiving yardage total was a career high for him and the first time he recorded 100+ receiving yards in a game.
Mason McKenzie (Caledonia, Mich. / Caledonia HS) also had a strong game. He compiled 243 passing yards and 110 rushing yards, totaling 353 yards of offense. This is his second career game with 200+ passing and 100+ rushing yards, both this season.
Christian Boivin (Traverse City, Mich. / Traverse City West HS) led the Cardinals with 12 tackles, five solo, plus a fumble recovery. It is his second game this season with over 10 tackles. James McDonald (Warren, Mich. / De La Salle HS) reached double digits for the first time with 10 tackles. Junyoung Chung (Berrien Springs, Mich. / Berrien Springs HS) and Adom LeDuc (Utica, Mich. / Utica Stevenson HS) each recorded six tackles. Chung added a tackle for loss and a pass breakup. Jaden Bevier (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Ypsilantis HS) and Mason Nickel (Midland, Mich. / Dow HS) had sacks. Both Hodges and Pryor had interceptions and added four and two tackles, respectively.
1st-AND-10
• The 2025 schedule features seven home games and four road contests. SVSU drew three-straight at home (Northeastern State, Ganon, Northwood) to begin the season before making its only trip out of the state of Michigan last week against New Haven in Connecticut. The Cardinals open GLIAC play this week for homecoming against Northern Michigan before hosting Roosevelt the following week. Saginaw Valley then makes the first of two trips to Grand Rapids with a game at Grand Valley State for week seven before hosting Wayne State the following weekend. The second trip to Grand Rapids comes in week nine against Davenport. SVSU hosts Ferris State for the final home game of the season in week 10. It is the first time the Bulldogs have visited Saginaw Valley since the 2022 season. The season wraps with a trip to Houghton for a game against the Michigan Tech Huskies.
• Mason McKenzie has totaled 978 passing yards and 460 rushing yards this season. McKenzie ranks 5th in NCAA DII, 1st in the GLIAC, in rushing yards per carry (7.93) and 22nd in rushing yards (460). His GLIAC-leading 287.6 yards of total offense also ranks 17th in the nation.
• Four Cardinals have broken into the career leaders list: McKenzie is currently tied for 7th in completion percentage (57.7%) and is 8th in completions with 247. He is 307 passing yards shy of tying Charles McDowell for eighth with 3,500. Tylor McCoon is tied for 6th in average yards per punt with 39.0. Jaquan Howard remains 4th in all-time kick return yards (920). He is 171 yards short of moving into the top three of that chart. Adom LeDuc is 20th in sacks with 13.5. He is a half-sack short of advancing to 19th all-time. Terrence Brown Jr. is just 30 kick return yards outside of the career top 10 list.
• Christian Boivin leads the defense with 53 tackles and ranks 7th in D2 with 10.8 tackles per game. He led the Cardinal defense with 12 tackles, five solo, and a fumble recovery in the win over the Wildcats this past week. He earned GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week honors for his performance against NMU, where he anchored an SVSU defense that forced four turnovers, two sacks, and five tackles for loss.
• Junyoung Chung has 31 tackles, second-most on the team, and 13 solo tackles. Adom LeDuc leads the Cardinal pass rush with two sacks and 4.5 tackles for loss. He has 23 tackles total, which is the third-most on the team.
