PERU, Ind. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's golf team finished 11th out of 18 teams at the Midwest Collegiate hosted by Missouri-St. Louis on Monday, September 28 and Tuesday, September 29 at Rock Hollow Golf Club.
The Cardinals finished the three-round tournament with a team total of 894 (+30). SVSU opened with a 306 (+18) before improving by 13 strokes with a 293 (+5) in the second round. The Cardinals closed the tournament with a 295 (+7) in the final round.
Evan Klein (Guelph, Ontario, Bishop Macdonell HS) led Saginaw Valley and tied for eighth out of 102 golfers with an even-par total of 216. Klein was remarkably consistent throughout the tournament, carding an even-par 72 in all three rounds. He totaled 37 pars to tie for 10th in the field and was one of the golfers to record an eagle during the tournament.
Tony Spicuzza (Grandville, Mich., Grandville HS) tied for 47th with a three-round total of 226 (+10). Spicuzza opened with a 76 (+4) before firing the lowest round by a Cardinal at the tournament with a one-under 71 in the second round. He finished with a 79 (+7) on Tuesday. Spicuzza totaled 13 birdies to tie for sixth among the field and tied for third in par-three scoring at one-under.
Matthew Murdock finished tied for 62nd with a 228 (+12). Murdock recorded rounds of 76 (+4), 77 (+5), and 75 (+3). He was one of the most consistent golfers in the field, finishing second among all competitors with 40 pars over the three rounds.
Garrett Morrison (Flushing, Mich., Flushing HS) tied for 69th with a total of 231 (+15). After opening with an 83 (+11), Morrison responded with a one-over 73 in the second round and finished the tournament with a 75 (+3) on Tuesday.
AJ Gasper rounded out the Cardinal lineup and tied for 77th with a three-round total of 233 (+17). Gasper improved in each round, shooting an 82 (+10), 78 (+6), and a one-over 73 in the final round.
Jorge Basterra competed individually and finished 98th with a three-round total of 248 (+32).
As a team, Saginaw Valley finished fifth in par-three scoring at +11 and tied for fifth in par-five scoring at five-under. The Cardinals totaled 163 pars, tied for fourth-most in the field, and were one of nine teams to record an eagle during the tournament.
Up Next: Cardinal men's golf is back in action on Monday, October 12 and Tuesday, October 13 with the Doc Sprague Invitational hosted by Findlay. The two-day tournament takes place at the Findlay Country Club in Findlay, Ohio.
