UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich.- The Saginaw Valley State men's soccer team scored four second-half goals after being tied 0-0 at halftime in a 4-0 win over St. Cloud State. The Cardinals (5-1-4, 3-1-2 GLIAC) recorded more shots against the Huskies (3-7-1, 1-4-1 GLIAC) than any other team this season with 21.Â
SVSU outshot SCSU 10-1 in the first half. The Cardinals had a number of chances, but could not find the back of the net early on. SVSU had three corner kicks between the 39th and 40th minutes, which applied a lot of pressure to the St. Cloud State defense. The Huskies held, despite SVSU having had possession for 54% of the first half. Josh Izu (Lagos, Nigeria) led the Cardinals with three shots. Jo Bédard (Québec City, Canada, St. Andrew's School) put two shots on goal. The teams went into halftime in a scoreless tie.Â
The second half started with a quick strike from the Cardinals. Matty Telfer (Newcastle, England, Sunderland College) took a shot that was deflected, but it bounced right in front of the open net where Jack Fisher (Holt, Mich., Holt HS) buried his first career goal in the 46th minute. Telfer scored a goal of his own just six minutes later with assists from Gabo Vazquez (San Juan, Puerto Rico, DME Academy) and Geoff Ojango (Nairobi, Kenya, Loughborough College). Telfer picked up another assist when his pass drew the SCSU goalkeeper out of position, leaving a wide-open goal for Bernd Rathgeber (Nördlingen, Germany, BWG Neresheim Secondary School) to score his first of the year in the 57th minute. In about eleven minutes, SVSU went from tied to up 3-0 on St. Cloud State. In the 81st minute, Sora Kozaki (Saitama, Japan, Yaita Chuoh) was fouled in the box. Amadou Kouyate (Ann Arbor, Mich., Community HS) stepped up to take the penalty kick and converted, putting the Cardinals up 4-0.Â
Nick Kay (Walled Lake, Mich., Walled Lake Central HS) saved the only shot on goal that St. Cloud State sent his way. Jack Franklin (Jenks, Okla.) took over in net for the final 19 minutes and held on to the Cardinals' fourth consecutive clean sheet.Â
SVSU outshot the Huskies 21-6 (10-1 on goal) while also doubling them up in corner kicks, 10-5. There were 20 total fouls, 12 on St. Cloud State and eight on Saginaw Valley State. The Huskies were shown two yellow cards while the Cardinals were shown just one.Â
Up Next: Men's soccer will head on the road for two more GLIAC matches next week. They face the same St. Cloud State Huskies on Friday, October 9, at 8:30 PM before taking on Roosevelt on Sunday, October 11, at 1 PM.
