ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team battled Roosevelt to a 0-0 draw Sunday afternoon at Morris Field.
The Cardinals (6-1-5, 4-1-3 GLIAC) earned their fifth clean sheet in the last six matches, with Jack Franklin (Jenks, Okla.) making five saves after entering in the ninth minute. SVSU finished with 12 shots and three on goal, while Roosevelt recorded 13 attempts with five on target.
Saginaw Valley generated the first shot of the match when Matty Telfer (Newcastle, England, Sunderland College) sent an attempt high in the ninth minute. Adrian Hatman (Hîncesti, Moldova, Lucian Blaga) produced the Cardinals' first shot on goal at 13:46, but his attempt was saved.
Roosevelt began to create chances midway through the opening half, but Franklin was up to the task. The Cardinal goalkeeper made saves in the 20th, 27th, 35th and 38th minutes to keep the match scoreless. Hatman nearly broke through at the other end, putting another attempt on frame in the 40th minute. Roosevelt then hit the woodwork just over two minutes before halftime as the teams entered the break tied 0-0.
Both defenses continued to hold after halftime. Roosevelt hit the woodwork again early in the second half before SVSU began searching for the opening goal. Oleksiy Kharko (Mississauga, Ontario, Philip Pocock Secondary Catholic School) and Telfer each had attempts miss the target before Josh Izu (Lagos, Nigeria) added a shot in the 74th minute.
The Cardinals created their best late opportunity in the 84th minute when Amadou Kouyate (Ann Arbor, Mich., Community HS) put an attempt on goal, but it was saved to keep the match scoreless. Neither side recorded another shot over the final six minutes as the match ended in a draw.
Hatman led Saginaw Valley with three shots and two on goal, while Telfer and Kharko each attempted two. Kouyate recorded the Cardinals' other shot on target.
Franklin played the final 81:24 and stopped all five shots he faced. Nick Kay (Walled Lake, Mich., Walled Lake Central HS) started in goal and played the opening 8:36 as the two combined for the shutout.

Parkside comes to SVSU on Friday, October 16 at 1 PM before the Cardinals welcome Purdue Northwest for Senior Day on Sunday, October 18.
