DETROIT – The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team opened a four-game series with Wayne State University on Friday at Harwell Field in Detroit.
The Cardinals took a 4-3 lead in the fourth inning, but the Warriors scored seven unanswered runs and held off a ninth inning rally to top SVSU 10-8. The loss drops the Cardinals to 16-11 overall and 7-2 in the GLIAC.
Game Breakdown:
- The Cardinals got on the board first with an RBI double in the first from Todd Paperd.
- The Warriors answered in the bottom of the inning with a pair of runs to move in front 2-1.
- Paperd tied the game in the third with an RBI single, followed by an RBI single from Tucker Roe to put SVSU back in front 3-2.
- After the Warriors tied the game in the bottom of the third, Connor McClennen singled home Reed Raymond in the fourth to give the Cardinals a 4-3 advantage.
- Wayne State scored two in the fourth and three in the fifth to move back in front. The Warriors carried a 10-4 lead into the ninth.
- Roe got a rally started for the Cardinals with an RBI single before Austin Schweiger hit a three-run home run to cut the deficit to two.
- The Warriors held the Cardinals off the board the rest of the way to close out the series-opening win for Wayne State.
- Kendall Anthes (2-3) got the start on the mound and was charged with the loss. He went five innings, allowing eight runs, six earned, walking two, and striking out two.
- McClennen finished with three hits, one RBI and a run scored.
