SVSU splits GLIAC DH with Parkside

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team hosted the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday from the SVSU Baseball Complex. 

The visiting Rangers took game one by a final score of 3-2 in seven innings, while the Cardinals won the second game 7-4. SVSU is now 14-10 overall and 6-1 in the GLIAC

Game One Breakdown:

  • After a scoreless top of the first inning, Reed Raymond came around to score thanks to a Parkside error in the bottom of the first.
  • The Rangers took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth, before an RBI single by Jeffrey Reseigh tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth. 
  • In the top of the fifth, Parkside took the lead following an RBI single.
  • SVSU was unable to get the tying run across the plate, and Parkside came away with the 3-2 victory. 
  • On the mound Hayden Jatczak (0-1) got the start for the Cardinals, going 4.2 innings and allowing three runs, three hits, and recording five strikeouts. He was relieved by Hunter Merillat who pitched 2.1 innings and struck out five. 

Game Two Breakdown:

  • The Rangers jumped on the board first in the top of the third inning, before SVSU answered with a run of their own after Connor McClennen singled home Ethan Dufresne.
  • SVSU scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth, capped off by Andrew Burke's RBI single that scored Tucker Roe
  • In the top of the sixth inning, Parkside got to within one run after a two-run single, making the score 4-3.
  • The Cardinals answered with three more runs in the bottom of the seventh, highlighted by a Martin Money RBI triple that scored Jatczak and Reed Raymond
  • Parkside scored one more run in the top of the eighth, but couldn't complete a comeback.
  • Christopher Schmees (3-1) picked up his third win of the season for SVSU after pitching 5.1 innings, allowing three runs, three hits, and striking out six. Reed Raymond earned his fourth save of the season after pitching the final 3.2 innings for the Cardinals and posting six strikeouts.

The Cardinals and Rangers will play the series finale at 1:05 pm Sunday from the SVSU Baseball Complex.
