KENOSHA, Wis. – The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team opened a four-game weekend series with a doubleheader sweep at the University of Wisconsin Parkside Friday in Kenosha, Wis.
The Cardinals won game one 5-3 in seven innings and the SVSU offense took control of game two in a 20-4 victory. The sweep evens the overall record this season for the Cardinals at 5-5. SVSU is 3-3 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
In game one, SVSU got on the board first when Parker Jatczak earned a bases-loaded walk in the second inning. After the Rangers tied the game in the bottom of the second, SVSU took advantage of a Parkside error in the fourth to move back in front, scoring two in the inning.
Casey Oliver tied the game once again for Parkside with a two-run home run in the fifth. Hayden Jatczak's sacrifice fly in the sixth gave the Cardinals a 4-3 lead and Todd Paperd hit a solo home run in the seventh for an insurance run.
Hayden Jatczak (2-1) got the win on the mound, tossing five innings, allowing three runs on four hits, walking two, and striking out seven. Hunter Merillat earned a two-inning save, striking out four in relief.
In the finale of the doubleheader, SVSU took control early. After a two-run single from Hayden Jatczak in the top of the first, SVSU scored four times in the second, including RBIs from Thomas Loftus, Martin Money, and Austin Koin.
Parkside got on the board with two in the bottom of the second, but SVSU answered with seven unanswered runs. Koin and Jaccar Watkins each picked up an RBI in the fourth, while Loftus added another in the fifth. Money doubled home two runs later in the fifth wo make it 11-2. The Cardinals continued to pour it on in the sixth with RBI singles from Andrew Burke and Brandon Scheurer.
SVSU made it 16-3 in the eighth with an RBI double from Reseigh and a two-run single from Scheurer, while Burke, Reseigh and Dylan Golden each added an RBI in the ninth.
Scheurer got on base six times, including three hits and three walks. He scored three runs and drove in three. Reseigh had a team-high five hits, adding four runs and two RBIs. Loftus recorded three hits, four runs, and two RBIs.
Nolan Knauf (1-0) got the win on the mound for the Cardinals, allowing two runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out seven in six innings of work.
The Cardinals continue the weekend series with the Rangers with one game Saturday (weather permitting) in Kenosha, Wis.
