KENOSHA, Wis. – The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team closed a four-game weekend series at the University of Wisconsin Parkside with a doubleheader Sunday in Kenosha, Wis.
Down 4-0 in the opener, SVSU scored six in the fourth and led the rest of the way in an 11-6 win. The Cardinals controlled game two and led by 10 after an eight-run seventh, as SVSU went on for a 15-7 victory.
The four-game sweep of Parkside pushes SVSU's record to 7-5 overall and 5-3 in the GLIAC. The four-game GLIAC sweep is the first for SVSU since the final weekend of the 2016 season when the Cardinals took four from then-league-member Ohio Dominican University.
In game one, the SVSU rally started with a bases-loaded walk from Thomas Loftus, followed by a three-run double for Hayden Jatczak to tie the score at four in the fourth. Martin Money put SVSU in front with a two-run home run later in the inning.
Tucker Roe added to the advantage in the fifth with a two-run double, while Loftus and Jatczak each picked up an RBI in the seventh. Jatczak led the way on offense for SVSU with three hits, two runs, and four RBIs.
Nolan Hamilton (1-0) entered the game in the third for the Cardinals and pitched four innings of relief, earning the win. He allowed two runs on three hits and struck out two.
The finale started with a 5-0 lead for the Cardinals. SVSU opened the scoring with an RBI single from Money in the first. Andrew Burke singled home a run to start a four-run fourth, followed by a two-run double from Brandon Scheurer and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Loftus.
Parkside closed the gap with three runs in the fifth before SVSU opened it back up with eight in the seventh. Money drove in one with a double, followed by a two-run double from Jaccar Watkins. Scheurer knocked in three with a bases-loaded triple followed by an RBI single off the bat of Loftus as the Cardinals cruised to the finish.
Kyle Henigan got the start, allowing three runs, two earned, on three hits, walking three, and striking out four. Eric Fritz (1-1) entered the game in the fifth and pitched 2.1 innings, getting the win, allowing four runs, three earned, on five hits, walking three, and striking out five. Hunter Merillat finished the game, pitching 2.1 scoreless innings and striking out four.
The Cardinals return to action against Lawrence Tech at 6:35 pm Wednesday at Comerica Park in Detroit. More information on this game, including tickets, will be announced when available.
