HAMMOND, Ind. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team fell in the semifinals of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference postseason tournament against No. 5 seed Ashland University, ending the Cardinal's fantastic run in the event, Friday in Hammond, Ind.
The Eagles jumped out to an 8-0 lead and never looked back, topping the Cardinals 83-57, ending SVSU's season with a record of 5-12 overall.
The Cardinals entered the tournament as the No. 10 seed, winning a play in-game at the University of Wisconsin Parkside on Tuesday and knocking off the GLIAC regular-season champion and No. 1 seed Wayne State University in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
Myles Belyeu led the Cardinals with 19 points on 7-of-15 shooting, hitting three 3-pointers. He also tied for the team-high in rebounds with seven. Darnell Hoskins Jr. finished with 14 points, while Freddie McIntosh and Delano Smith each added eight points.
SVSU shot 20-of-59 from the field, 5-of-22 from deep, and 12-of-15 from the line, finishing with five assists, five steals, and eight turnovers in the loss.
Brandon Haraway led the Eagles, who will play for the GLAIC Tournament title on Sunday, with a game-high 25 points.
