UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball team lost a heartbreaker in overtime to Wayne State University in the finale of a weekend Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference weekend series Saturday at the James E. O'Neill Jr. Arena.
The Cardinals were outscored 15-6 in the extra frame, falling to the Warriors 79-70. The loss ends a three-game win streak for SVSU, which falls to 7-9 overall and 7-9 in the GLIAC with two games remaining in the regular season.
The Cardinals erased a five-point halftime deficit and led 49-47 heading to the fourth. Tyler Scheid hit a 3-pointer with 1:52 remaining to put the Cardinals up two, but the SVSU offense went cold the rest of the way. After Wayne State tied the game, a buzzer-beating layup from Maddie Maloney missed the mark for SVSU, sending the contest to overtime.
In the extra session, the Warriors took control, opening on an 8-0 run, including a pair of 3-pointers to secure the win.
Maloney scored a team-high 18 points for the Cardinals, including four 3-pointers. Kaitlyn Zarycki added 14 points and seven steals, while Maddie Barrie finished with 13 points and six rebounds.
SVSU shot 24-of-59 from the field, 9-of-29 from deep, and 13-of-15 at the line, finishing with 15 assists, nine steals, and 12 turnovers.
The Warriors were led by a game-high 26 points from Kate Sherwood, while Same Cherney added a double-double with 13 points and 19 rebounds.
The regular season concludes for SVSU with a road series at Davenport University starting at 4 pm Friday in Grand Rapids, Mich.
