DETROIT -- The Saginaw Valley State University Baseball team continued its series on Saturday at Wayne State University, playing a pair of seven inning games. The Cardinals dropped the opener by a score of 13-9 before falling in the nightcap, 5-0.
Despite the two defeats, The Cards sealed a bid to their first GLIAC Tournament appearance since the 2014 season after Grand Valley dropped its second game on Saturday.
Game 1
SV took a 4-0 lead in the 2nd inning when Andrew Burke had a triple to center field that scored Gerrit Eding, Thomas Loftus and Mitch Morley. Burke scored right behind them as well, making it four runs on the play after a throwing error.
Wayne State went scored two in the 3rd and 11 runs in the 4th, using eight hits and three runs in that inning to take a 13-4 lead over Saginaw Valley.
In the 5th, SVSU added three runs to trim the deficit to 13-7. Adam Turner was walked with the bases loaded to score Derrek Clyde, Craig Wilson had an RBI fielder's choice to plate Jordan Swiss and Seth Stratton had a bases-loaded walk to plate Joshua Riggs for the third run.
The final runs of the game came for Saginaw Valley in the top of the 7th, as Loftus had an RBI bunt single to plate Wilson and Tucker Roe had a sacrifice fly to push Morley across. That put the score at 13-9, which would prove to be the final.
Ian Janssen (1-2) took the loss in relief, allowing three runs with a pair of walks. Chase Gearing worked 3.0 innings of scoreless relief to finish the game.
Burke had three RBI on his triple while Clyde, Turner and Morley all added a double. Wilson had a hit and RBI, as did Loftus. Stratton and Roe each had an RBI and Morley had two runs batted-in.
Game 2
The only five runs of the game came in the bottom of the 4th inning, as the Warriors scored five runs on six hits to take a 5-0 lead. The home team closed-out for the five run win after holding SV scoreless in the contest.
Saginaw Valley had three hits in the game, with Swiss, Riggs and Collin Winters each registering a base knock. Clyde and Riggs each had a walk as well in the contest.
Camden Dice (1-6) took the loss in the nightcap, pitching 4.0 innings and allowing five runs on nine hits. He struck-out three batters and walked one in the game.
