Cardinals Fall in Day One of Midwest Crossover

INDIANAPOLIS — The SVSU Volleyball team headed down to the Academy Club in Indiana for a two-day crossover tournament with 32 schools in attendance. On Friday, the Cardinals first fell to the #2 GLVC team, Rockhurst 3-0, followed by a loss GMAC member, Truman State, 3-1. Saginaw Valley is now 14-7 on the year. 

Match One: RU 3 - SVSU 0

In set one, SVSU led in kills with 12 against RU, but was unable to minimize the errors. Rockhurst took set one, hitting .310, 25-17. 

The Cardinals continued to struggle in set three, only edging out a 8-7 ratio in kills to errors. The Hawks stepped up their offense, posting 15 kills. RU edged out a 2-0 lead heading into set three. 

Olivia Dean contributed in the final set, posting five total kills on the match — leading the team in kills. RU continued to grow their offense, earning 16 kills. The final set went to the Hawks, 25-14, and the match, 3-0. 

Abbie Toland lead the defense with 13 digs while Hannah Tabit added 13 assists. 

Match Two: TSU 3 - SVSU 1

Once again, it was a game of errors between the two squads. Saginaw Valley led 15 kills to Truman States 11, but the nine attacking errors would lead to a Bulldog win, 25-21. 

Truman State begin to have multiple late errors in set two, allowing SVSU to creep back in after being down majority of the set. Saginaw Valley grabbed two huge kills to take the set, 25-23, over the Bulldogs. Heading into set three, the Cards and Bulldogs were all tied up 1-1. 

TSU added a .375 attacking percentage in set three, posting 20 kills over the Cardinals. Although, SVSU stayed strong, posting 14 kills and only three errors. The Bulldogs took the set, 25-19, and edged out a 2-1 lead heading into the fourth set. 

Saginaw Valley's offense came out strong in the final set against Truman State, posting 17 kills in the fourth set. Although, with the seven attacking errors from the Cards front line, TSU was able to slip by and take the set, 25-21, and the match, 3-1. 

Maria Vukaj added 12 kills with nine digs, Sarah Tabit notched 16 kills and seven digs, while Emily Friesl ended in the top slot for the Cards, adding 15 kills with only one error in the entire match.

SVSU will finish up the crossover on Saturday (Oct. 13) against Walsh at 1 p.m. Live stats will be available for the contest.
