MELBOURNE, Fla. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's tennis team recorded its third straight 9-0 victory of the spring season Tuesday, March 8, this time over the University of Southern Indiana, a regional Division II opponent from the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
"This was a solid Southern Indiana team, but our team played extremely well," said Jenn Boehm, head coach. "In doubles, we played aggressively and made minimal unforced errors. In singles, they figured out a game plan and stuck with it. This was a good regional win for our team."
Playing at the Jimmy Moore Tennis Complex in Melbourne, Florida, the Cardinals jumped to a 3-0 lead after doubles. Erin Doud and Ana Pico Garcia recorded an 8-1 win at no. 1 doubles; Shea Donahue and Abby Shonk won at no. 3 doubles by the same score. At no. 2 doubles, Izabella Ismailova and Danielle Slonac claimed a hard-fought match, 8-4.
In singles play, Ismailova claimed victory at no. 1 singles, 7-6 (1), 6-4. Ana Pico Garcia followed suit at no. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-2. Shea Donahue dropped the second set but retuned to form in the third, winning 6-1, 2-6, 6-1.
Erin Doud continued the scoring with a 6-3, 6-2 win at no. 4 singles. Abby Shonk defeated her opponent 6-3, 6-1, and Danielle Slonac was a winner, as well, 6-2, 6-0.
The Cardinals will return to action this afternoon against nationally-ranked Florida Tech.
