BAY CITY, Mich. - The head coaches of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) have chosen the SVSU baseball team to finish in fourth place in the GLIAC North Division for the upcoming 2016 season.
The Cardinals finished in the No. 4 slot with 40 points, two behind Northwood University, which received one first place vote as well. Wayne State University received 56 points and a single first place nod while Grand Valley State University was picked to win the North Division with the remaining 10 first place votes and 64 points overall.
Ashland University was tabbed to win the South Division, garnering 64 points and 10 first place nods. Ohio Dominican was picked to finish runner-up with 51 points and a pair of first place votes. Malone (45), Lake Erie (41), Tiffin (24) and Walsh (21) rounded-out the preseason standings for the south.

The SVSU baseball team is looking to bounce back from a 2015 campaign that saw the Cardinals post a 20-20-1 overall record, finishing in 8th place overall in the GLIAC standings with a 14-17-1 league record. SVSU returns a few centerpieces from last year's team, as well as many fresh faces for the upcoming 2016 season.
Back in the everyday lineup is leading hitter and junior second baseman, Chad Carson. Carson hit .396 a year ago with 14 doubles, three triples, 21 RBI and 14 walks. The Cards return their top two starting pitchers from 2015 as well in junior Scott Sency and sophomore Mike Ellenbest. Both earned Second Team All-GLIAC honors in 2015, with Ellenbest being named the GLIAC Freshman Pitcher of the Year. Both pitchers went 5-3 on the mound, with Sency posting a 2.32 ERA and Ellenbest a 2.57 mark.
Saginaw Valley opens its season on the road February 27-28 with a three-game series at Kentucky State. That begins a string of 12 games through Kentucky, North Carolina, Georgia and South Carolina before playing Quincy, Indianapolis and Ashland in final non-conference tune-ups.
