GRAND RAPIDS - The Saginaw Valley State University women's tennis team opened the spring portion of its 2014-15 season with a 7-2 victory at Aquinas College on Friday night (Feb. 20) at the Riverview Athletic Club in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
The Lady Cardinals got off to a good start in a match where every team member had at least one victory over the home team.
SVSU posted a clean 3-0 sweep in the double matches to get things going.
Izabella Ismailova and Erin Doud posted an 8-3 victory at the #1 singles position while the #2 doubles team of Meghan Woody and Lauren Sharp also claimed an 8-3 win over their opponents. Shea Donahue and Abigail Shonk teamed-up in the #3 doubles slot for an 8-4 decision over their Aquinas competitors.
Woody posted a 6-1, 6-4 win at #2 singles and Donahue posted a 6-3, 6-4 victory in the #4 singles position. Shonk and Danielle Slonac recorded 6-0, 6-0 sweeps at the #5 and #6 singles position, respectively, as well.
"This was a great first match for us to kick-off our spring season," stated Head Coach Jenn Boehm. "After only a handful of practices this semester, I was very impressed at how these ladies came out ready to play. We will face some very tough opponents in the coming weeks so that is good motivation for us to keep working to improve across the board."
That tough stretch begins on Monday, March 2nd on the team's spring trip to Orlando, Florida against Cedarville (Ohio). First serve for the match is set for 11:30 am.
