ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. - The SVSU women's tennis team opened their spring break trip with an 8-1 victory over Cedarville Monday, March 2. SVSU President Don Bachand and his wife Liana were on hand for much of the match to support the team.
Meghan Woody and Lauren Sharp won their doubles match 8-2 at no. 2 doubles; high school teammates Abby Shonk and Danielle Slonac cruised to an 8-0 victory at no. 3 doubles. Erin Doud and Izabella Ismailova dropped their no. 1 doubles match 8-5, but each rallied to win in singles. Ismailova won 6-4, 6-0 at no. 1 singles, and Doud won 6-2, 6-1 at no. 3 singles.
Woody played the day's most dramatic match at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla. With teammates, family and fans of both teams cheering, she won at no. 2 singles in a third-set tiebreaker, 6-2, 3-6, 11-9.
In other singles action, Shea Donahue picked up a win at no. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-1. Shonk (6-0, 6-0) and Sharp (6-1, 6-0) each won in singles, as well.
The Cardinals return to the courts tomorrow against Nova Southeastern, currently ranked no. 10 in the nation in NCAA Division II.
