BAY CITY - The Cardinals of Saginaw Valley State University finished up play on Sunday (9/14) in the season-opening event of the 2014-15 season with a fourth place showing.  The tournament was the Al Watrous Intercollegiate, which SVSU hosted at the Bay City Country Club.

After an opening round 300 (+12) in adverse weather on Saturday, the Cards posted a 291 (+3) in slightly better conditions on Sunday to finish with a total score of 591, just a stroke behind third place Lake Superior State.

Northwood finished in second place with a 588 while Ferris State won the tournament with a two-day total of 582, six strokes clear of the Timberwolves.

Senior Micah Skidmore had the low round of the day for SV, as he fired a two-under 70 to finish at +3 for the weekend (147) in a tie for 10th place.  Fellow senior Wyatt Drost shot a 73 on day two and tied for 15th place with a score of 148 (75-73).  Senior Carter Marsh posted the identical 75-73 scores as Drost and tied his Cardinal teammate in the 15th spot overall.  Senior Jeremy Schultz, who had the low round for SV on Saturday (74), shot a 75 and finished in a tie for 19th place with a total score of 149.  Mitch Sikorski was the fifth competitor for Saginaw, as he completed the weekend with scores of (76-76) to tie for 27th.

Junior Ryan Thomas played as an individual and had the best overall score for an SVSU player.  He followed his opening round of 71 with an even-par 72 on Sunday to finish in second place with a score of 143 (-1).  Sophomore Ryan Peruski, who held the round one lead after a 70, carded a 74 to finish at even-par and a tie for third place as an individual competitor.

Northwood's Paul Ostby claimed the tournament's medalist honors after shooting twin rounds of 71-71 to win by a stroke over Thomas.

Saginaw Valley returns to action this weekend (Sept. 20-21) at the GLIAC North Tournament, which will be played at the HawksHead Golf Links in South Haven, Michigan.
