BAY CITY - The head coaches of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) have chosen the Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team to finish in third place in the league for the 2014 season.
The Cardinals racked-up 39 points, including one first place vote to finish two points behind second place Ohio Dominican, which also received a top vote to finish with 41 points. Six coaches tabbed Tiffin as the league's best team, as the Dragons finished with 44 points overall to lead the poll.
2014 SVSU Men's Soccer GLIAC Preview
The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team looks to build on its recent success in the upcoming 2014 season after a 2013 campaign that featured the Cardinals posting an 11-4-5 overall record and 8-2-4 mark in GLIAC play. SVSU fell in double overtime of the GLIAC Tournament Championship Match to Ohio Dominican by a score of 2-1.
Things are looking good for the Cards, however, as the team returns reigning GLIAC "Offensive Player of the Year" in junior Tyler Channell, GLIAC "Defensive Player of the Year" in senior Michael Lamb and GLIAC "Freshman of the Year" in Jordan Kalk.
Channell had eight goals and three assists for 19 points, just two behind Kalk, who led the team with 21 points, scoring 10 goals and adding one assist. Lamb notched four goals on just nine shots and was the anchor of an SVSU defense that allowed just 18 goals in as many contests. The Cardinals also return All-GLIAC second team mid-fielder Zach Vasold.
Saginaw Valley opens its 2014 season at home against Lewis University on September 4th at 3:30 pm before hosting Cedarville on September 6th at 1:00 pm.
