UNIVERSITY CENTER - Saginaw Valley State University Men's Basketball Head Coach Randy Baruth has announced some additions to the program for the upcoming 2014-15 season.

The program has added James Hellekjaer as an assistant coach.  Hellekjaer comes to the Cardinals from Division I Oakland University, where he served as the team's Player Development Assistant and Video Coordinator.

While with the Golden Grizzlies, Hellekjaer's responsibilities included: coordinating all video activities and needs, coordinating community outreach programs, assisting with the oversight of academic progress and assisting with day-to-day operations of the basketball program. Hellekjaer has also served as the director of the Greg Kampe Basketball Fundamental Camps since 2010.

Prior to Oakland, Hellekjaer served as a student manager for the women's basketball team at Michigan State University. He assisted with day-to-day operations and had a variety of practice and game day responsibilities. He was part of three NCAA tournament teams, including two Sweet Sixteen appearances in 2006 and 2009.

The team will have four student-athletes join the squad for the upcoming campaign as well, as Mitchell Baenziger, Sam Black, Lloyd Neely and Will Stuhr will all join the Cardinals for the 2014-15 season.  Below is some information on all of the Cardinals' new additions to the program, as well as Coach Baruth's thoughts on the individuals:

Baenziger transferred from Oakland University, where he played in all 33 games for the Golden Grizzlies and shot 38 percent (30-for-80) from behind the arc, ranking him 13th best in the league.  He shot 5-for-5 from the floor and scored a career-high 14 points at Indiana on December 10th.  He prepped at Clarkston High School under head coach Dan Fife, where he was named all-state his senior year and earned a varsity letter in basketball.

Coach Baruth on Mitch Baenziger - "Mitch comes to us after two years at Oakland University. Mitch brings both shooting and maturity to our program. His ability to make shots and create for others will make him a great addition to our team. "

Black prepped at Pinckney High School under head coach Tom Reason. He earned nine varsity letters in basketball, golf and track & field.  His senior year he was named the Pinckney High School "Athlete of the Year"  He was selected all-conference in basketball, a team captain and was a two-time MVP and led team in scoring, assists and efficiency.

Coach Baruth on Sam Black - "Sam will be a great addition to our roster. He was an excellent shooter in high school and we believe he can help us space the floor. On top of that, Sam is also a good athlete so we think he will be able to help guard players in the backcourt."

Neely is another transfer from Oakland University. He prepped at Detroit Crockett High School under head coach Juan Rickman. Neely won Mr. PSL award for the best senior player in Detroit. He was named all-state, all-district, all-area, team captain and led his team to a district title.

Coach Baruth on Lloyd Neely - "Like Mitch, Lloyd comes to us after a spending two years at Oakland University. Lloyd has a nose for the ball, which will help us on the offensive and defensive glass. His ability to move for a post player his size and his experience in the front court make him a great asset to our team. "

Stuhr prepped at Ryle High School under head coach David McFarland, where he was a two-year letterwinner in basketball. He was named the 33rd District Tournament MVP his senior year.  Stuhr was selected as a 9th Region All-Star in both his junior and senior seasons.  He set a school record for rebounds in a game (23) and led the Raiders to a pair of regional tournament appearances.

Coach Baruth on Will Stuhr - "We're happy to add Will to our program. He's a skilled four man that has the ability to post but can also step out and stretch the floor as well.  We're looking forward to adding his competitiveness and work ethic to our roster".
