The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team is set to take on rival Northwood University in the 2014 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament on Sunday (11/9) at 1:00 pm in Tiffin, Ohio. This will be the third meeting between the Cardinals and Timberwolves this year. The teams played to a 0-0 draw in double overtime on September 12th at SVSU and Northwood defeated SVSU 2-1 in overtime on October 31st in Midland.
SVSU defeated the top-seeded Tiffin Dragons 2-1 in the tournament semifinals on Friday (11/7). The Cardinals trailed 1-0 at the half, but a pair of goals in the second half propelled SVSU to a 2-1 victory. Senior Philip Strachan and junior Vaughn Frederick scored the goals for Saginaw Valley.
Northwood defeated the Lake Erie Storm 2-0 in the first semifinal game on Friday. The T'Wolves used a pair of goals in the second half as well to defeat the Storm. Goalkeeper Johannes Sterobo recorded his eighth shutout of the season while recording five saves in the contest.
Sunday's championship game marks the third straight time SVSU has reached the GLIAC Tournament Championship game. Last season, the Cardinals fell to the top-seeded Ohio Dominican Panthers 2-1 in overtime. Saginaw Valley defeated Notre Dame (Ohio) 1-0 in the 2012 championship game for their last GLIAC Tournament Championship.
