UNIVERSITY CENTER – The Saginaw Valley State Women's Basketball team has announced its 2015 recruiting class, as four prep standouts have signed National Letters of Intent to continue their academic and athletic careers at SVSU.
This year's recruiting class features Halee Nieman (Midland, MI / Bullock Creek), Hannah Settingsgaard (Oak Creek, WI / Oak Creek), Kassy Nelson (LeRoy, MI / Pine River) and Tori Lennartz (Fort Recovery, OH / Fort Recovery).
"We are thrilled to announce these four individuals as the latest additions to the SVSU Women's Basketball program. Each of them fills a need for us and will add depth to our current roster. All four come from very good high school and AAU programs with great coaches. We have no doubt that each one will bring something different to the table and have an immediate impact on the program. They are hardworking individuals who strive for excellence in both the classroom and on the court. Halee Nieman – 5'10" – Forward, Bullock Creek H.S., Midland, MI
During her time at Bullock Creek, Nieman has earned four varsity letters and back-to-back district, regional and final four appearances in Class B. Nieman has also garnered awards for All-State Honorable Mention, 1st Team All-Conference, Midland Daily News Dream Team and has been recognized as a BCAM Top 100 Player. A member of the MI FastBreak program, Nieman has won three straight AAU State Championships. She plans on majoring in Social Work at SVSU.
"Halee fills a huge need for us with three forwards graduating this season. She is a proven winner and comes from two great programs in Bullock Creek and the MI FastBreak. Halee has an unbelievable desire to get better and plays extremely hard every time she's on the floor. Her skill set will allow us to play her inside and on the perimeter which makes it very difficult for opposing teams to match up. We are very excited to have Halee with us" – Coach Pewinski
Hannah Settingsgaard – 5'9" – Guard, Oak Creek H.S., Oak Creek, WI
Settingsgaard, a highly sought after guard from Wisconsin, has put together an impressive four year prep career. Her Oak Creek team won the 2014 State Championship and was ranked 25th in the country. Some of her individual accolades include, 2nd Team All-Conference, Wisconsin Top 30 Player, WSN All-Showcase Team, All-Suburban Team and Top Defender Award for Oak Creek. She is part of the WI WBA Prestige program and has compiled a record of 178-33 (.844) during her four years. Settingsgaard is planning to major in Business / Marketing at SVSU.
"Hannah's biggest strength is her ability to defend. She is known as a tenacious defender and will, no doubt, be able to help with some of the great guards we face in our conference. Her team accomplishments at Oak Creek and with the WBA Prestige speak for themselves; she's a winner. On the offensive side of the ball, she can create shots with her ability to get to the rim, but can also make it hard for people guarding her because she shoots it really well. Hannah will be a huge asset to our team next season and we're excited about what she'll bring" – Coach Pewinski
Kassy Nelson – 5'6" – Guard, Pine River H.S., Le Roy, MI
While at Pine River High School, Nelson has garnered Michigan All-State honors twice and 1st Team All-Conference and 1st Team All-Area three times. Nelson has earned 8 total varsity letters by participating in volleyball and softball as well. She has also been recognized through a number of different local and team awards, as well as through her participation with the Michigan Elite basketball program. A strong student, Nelson is a member of the National Honor Society, Principal's Council and an Honors Guard. She will be majoring in pre-medicine at SVSU.
"Kassy is one of the best shooters in the class of 2015 out of Michigan. As we continued to watch her over the summer, she stood out as much more than just a shooter though. She can handle the ball and will be able to play the point for us if needed. She works extremely hard and she just flat out loves to the play the game. She will be a great representative of our program and the exciting part about Kassy is her best basketball is ahead of her" – Coach Pewinski
Tori Lennartz – 5'10" - Guard, Fort Recovery H.S., Fort Recovery, OH
Lennartz preps at Fort Recovery High School in Ohio where she already ranks in the Top 10 in career scoring. She has earned 5 varsity letters and was named 1st Team All-Conference, 2nd Team All-District and All-Area Honorable Mention. She is a member of the Dayton Lady Hoopstars AAU program that won the Ohio State Championship in 2013 and 2014. Lennartz plans to major in Business / Sport Management at SVSU.
"We couldn't be more excited to have Tori join our Cardinal family. She will definitely add a different dimension to our team next season. One of the things we like most about Tori is her ability to play multiple positions. She's a versatile guard that can handle the ball, shoot and get to the basket, but she is extremely unselfish and thinks about the team first.
