MIDLAND - The Saginaw Valley State University women's tennis team finished its 2014 season on a great note, posting a 5-4 victory over the Ohio Dominican University Panthers in the seventh place match of the 2014 GLIAC Women's Tennis Tournament.
SVSU had to fight back from another 2-1 deficit after doubles play, as the only Cardinal victory of the three came at the #3 doubles position with Lauren Sharp and Shea Donahue posting an 8-4 edge over their opponents.
Izabella Ismailova had a 6-2, 6-2 win at #1 singles as well while Shea Donahue (6-3, 6-0) and Lauren Sharp (6-3, 4-6, 6-4) recorded victories at the #4 and #6 positions, respectively.
The Panthers had wins at #2 and #3 singles, knotting the match up at 4-4 with the #5 singles contest still out on the court.
Abby Shonk stayed strong for the Cardinals, toughing-out a victory that went to the wire, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5.
It clinched the 5-4 win for SVSU and the seventh place finish in the tournament.
It concludes the 2014 season for Saginaw Valley, which had a pair of student-athletes garner GLIAC honors as well for their performances this season.
Ismailova was selected to the All-GLIAC Second Team by the league's coaches while Erin Doud was named to the All-GLIAC Honorable Mention Team.
