Tennis Drops 8-1 Contest to Wayne State

DETROIT - Facing a challenging opponent for the second day in a row, the Saginaw Valley State University women's tennis team fought hard but dropped an 8-1 decision to GLIAC regular season champion Wayne State University on Sunday afternoon (10/19).

The Cardinals picked up a victory in doubles at the #2 position, as Izabella Ismailova and Danielle Slonac defeated their opponents by a score of 8-4.  Lauren Sharp and Shea Donahue fought hard at #3 doubles as well but fell by a count of 8-6.

Dealing with the loss of senior #3 singles player Meghan Woody due to illness on Sunday, the Cardinals had to bump up a spot in competition below the #2 spot.

Despite a couple of close battles in singles competition, including a three-setter at the #5 singles position, the Warriors were able to win all six of the matchups.

"The 8-1 score does not tell the story of the four hour battle," said SVSU Head Coach Jenn Boehm, whose team awaits results from GLIAC play this week to see if the Cardinals will participate in postseason play.  "We played the #1 team in the conference today and played them very tough.  We missed having Meghan out there but our young team responded in a big way."

The contest wraps-up regular season competition for the Cardinals with a 4-8 overall and conference record.  SVSU will await the result of Michigan Tech's match with Tiffin on Wednesday to see if it will take part in the 2014 GLIAC Women's Tennis Tournament.
